Dota 2 is set to be Free-to-Play

So Valve have announced that their new game, Dota 2, will be free free-to-play!!! And have also revealed more details on the Dota Store today. The game is also set to feature a in-game store that will offer mostly cosmetic items,  and also things in a simpler vein like the offerings provided to the massive list of Team Fortress 2 players.

So is if this is starting to worry you that you won't have access to your favorites hero, fret not Valve says that it has no plans to sell hero characters in the Dota Store because as they put it: "restricting player access to heroes could be destructive to game design, so it’s something we plan to avoid."

They also went on to reveal that Dota 2 will be part of the Steam Workshop, and the company's service that lets fans share content they’ve created for games. This system allows fans to vote on content, with the most well received bits being released by Valve as official parts of the game, how freaking awesome is that, and as we know Valves fans and epic coders with almost limitless imagination. So sales of the content are then shared with content creators. Valve claims that it paid out over $3.5 million dollars to Team Fortress 2 fans whose creations became a permanent part of the game in the first year it became a free-to-play title and utilized Steam Workshop.
